There was a time early on in Our shared American history when farmers were required to grow cannabis for many products.
Hemp was used to make sails, rope, and clothing.
Even in certain states back then, hemp was used for legal tender. Then much later in history when there was a lot of immigration coming from Mexico, along with them unfortunately came recreational use of Cannabis which was popular with the unwelcome immigrants. They called it marijuana as it was a popular Mexican slang term at the time for Cannabis. There was a major rising fear that Marijuana was dangerous and made people go completely crazy. Eventually multiple states outlawed marijuana and soon to follow all this chaos came the reefer madness movement which effectively resulted in the villainized marijuana becoming illegal in 1937. This resulted from a popular film which was released that demonized cannabis making it seem that people went absolutely deranged and became violent. Later studies showed that there was truly zero accuracy to these claims, yet the laws continued to be made to enforce strict non-use and Punishment of Cannabis, but regardless, people who wanted to use Cannabis products still used it regardless of the seriously severe legal penalties and mandatory sentences. It is no secret today that people of color have been the most targeted for Cannabis use overtime. Today with legalization, multiple people are able to grow their fairy own Cannabis now and use this overpriced medicine products for their certain needs.
